A male wasp with huge teeth which, when opened, teeth even longer than its front legs, were discovered on the island of Sulawesi (Indonesia).
Researchers for bees with black shiny size about 6,4cm this as "Komodo dragon" of bee families.
"Its teeth so large that it covered the whole head when closed, and a longer forelegs when opened. I really do not understand it can go any way, "Lynn Kimsey, director of the museum Bohard of Entomology at the University of California said.
Giant jaws acts both safeguard and just "prove" is the masculine with female bees to be allowed to mate, the researchers speculated.
"We really do not know the effect of giant jaws of the male bees. However, in some other species bee, the males hanging at the entrance to protect the nest from parasites and robbed. The male bees then were awarded for once mating by female bees whenever they return to the hive. Thus, we can say that the jaw is an indirect tool to ensure developing race. Additionally, the jaw of the male bees need big enough to be able to keep the female bees when mating, "she Kimsey said.
Mrs. Kimsey discovered worker bumblebees on Mekongga mountains in southeastern Sulawesi in an expedition recent biodiversity. Exploration was sponsored by Cooperation Program International Biodiversity.
